On April 9, 2009 a devastating earthquake struck Abruzzo killing hundreds of people, injuring thousands and leaving thousands of people without a shelter. After three years from the event we, at TANTO Blog, want to talk positive and tell you the story of very interesting example of reconstruction.
We’ll talk about Pescomaggiore, near L’Aquila, where residents, who saw their houses totally knocked down, are rebuilding their homes by themselves: wooden interior walls, exterior walls made of plastered straw bales.
Pescomaggiore has 45 inhabitants, if not for this initiative, after the earthquake, they would have been moved to different areas and scattered away from their own community and Pescomaggiore would have probably disappeared. The project to rebuild this village is named EVA, Eco Villaggio Autoricostruito (Self rebuilt eco village). It is a totally self-financed project (donations and manual help from volunteers are welcome!), with which the inhabitants of Pescomaggiore intend to rebuild houses for them and for those who want to move and live there.
Around the EVA project a lot of interesting and fun initiatives take place and we will keep you posted with more information soon. Stay with us!
