Majella of shepherds and hermits

With this post we will start a virtual tour of Abruzzo accompanied by Tiziana Dicembre, a young, passionate Tour Guide born in Abruzzo, deeply in love with her homeland. She will give us little “commented postcards” of those places where she usually takes tourists introducing them to the Nature and Art of beautiful Abruzzo.
Our journey with Tiziana will start from Roccamorice,  in the province of Pescara. Roccamorice is a medieval village situated on a breathtaking rocky outcrop. It represents a perfect merge between man work and the sublime beauty of unspoiled nature.

From Roccamorice our virtual journey will continue on the Western slope of the Majella Mountain, along the deep valley of Santo Spirito,  where, set in the rock like gems, are the Monasteries of San Bartolomeo in Legio and Santo Spirito.

A blend of art, spirituality and nature, these retreats are a valuable evidence of the indissoluble link between the Mountain and its inhabitants, who have always loved and respected it, whether they were saints, hermits or shepherds.

A strong evidence of this deep bond are the numerous pastoral huts, built in dry stones, scattered across the Majella.

Visiting these sites one can imagine the hard life of the shepherds who have so deeply marked the socio-economic life of the whole Abruzzo, much to identify it as the “Land of Shepherds.”
